THE NATIONAL LITHUANIAN LIBRARY WEEK

READ! DISCOVER! ENJOY!

23-30 April 2006

For the sixth time already the Lithuanian Librarians Association (LLA) is inviting to celebrate the ultimate move of solidarity of Lithuanian librarians – the National Lithuanian Library Week that will take place on 23-30 April 2006. With the slogan of this Week ’Read! Discover! Enjoy!’ we invite all Lithuanian libraries and colleagues to speak, discuss, encourage and intensify one of the most meaningful activities of the human being – the reading.

Today the reading is becoming a fashionable occupation we find less and less time for. It is a pleasant and luxurious necessity bringing delight, awakening interest and turning the time spend for reading into a great value. Thus this Library Week is aimed at encouraging the willingness to read, shaping the positive attitude towards reading and raising the awareness of importance of reading and of delight the reading brings.

Dear colleagues! We call for your initiative, creativity and loud voices in:

§ Raising the interest of the public in the books through cooperation with local public authorities, educational, cultural and research institutions, presentation of the libraries and their services in thee institutions, organisation of the open days in the libraries, etc.
§ Introducing the reading to the people not as the duty or burden but as a pleasure bringing process through gathering children, schoolchildren, community members, etc. to discuss the books and the reading: ’My right (not) to read’, ‘Is the life an everlasting obstacle to reading?’, etc.
§ Bringing and sustaining the value of reading as of the hobby through organisation of book exhibitions, presentations, discussions, meetings with literary people, book lovers, etc.
§ Developing and encouraging reading traditions through dissemination of reading aloud, organisation of reading aloud not only in the libraries but in city squares, streets, shopping centres, cafés, etc.

The most distinctive moment of the Library Week will be the Librarian of the Year Award 2005 and presentation of encouragement awards.
The prize-giving will take place on 28 April of 2006 in the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania (J. Basanavičiaus St 5, Vilnius).

Traditionally, during the National Library Week we invite to organize meetings, promotions, competitions, quizzes, seminars, discussions, round tables, etc. Let’s also commemorate the World Book and Copyright Day (23 April) and the World Intellectual Property Day (26 April). And please do not forget to award 2% of your income tax to your library or the Lithuanian Librarians Association!

Let’s be active and united!
