History
The Lithuanian Librarians’ Association (LLA) was established in 1931 by Prof. Vaclovas Birziska, who also served as its first Chairman. The initial aim of the LLA was to join all Lithuanian librarians and bibliographers and help to improve their scientific abilities and working methods.
In 1941 the LLA was closed by the German occupants. After World War II Lithuania found itself under the authority of the Soviet Union and did not make attempts to re-establish the closed organisation.
The Association was re-established only on June 29th, 1989 after the movement for independence started in Lithuania.
In 1990 the LLA was admitted to IFLA as a National Association Member.

Aims
- to raise the reputation of librarians in Lithuanian society;
- to represent the social and professional rights of its members;
- to initiate and provide in-service training of librarians;
- to petition Lithuanian government and authorities for better recourses and equipment for libraries;
- to gain experience in the world practice of librarianship;
- to ensure the utmost professionalism in its members.
