About the library

During the years of the independent Lithuania, Karpėnai and Ramučiai villages nested in the place of the present Naujoji Akmenė city. In 1940, a reading-room was opened in a village house in Ramučiai. The reading-room barely survived for several months and was closed in 1941, with the start of the war. 1946 is considered to be a starting year of the public library. Throughout its history, the Library has changed its name for several times. With the growth of the city, factory and the population the Library collection and number of readers have increased too.
In 1966, the Children’s Literature Department was opened.
In 1988, the Library moved to the new premises. At present, the Library system consists of 3 city and 14 village branches.
The Library stores a collection of 71,067 copies of prints. It also has the German Literature Library of over 4,000 documents.
