About the library
Jurgis Kunčinas Public Library of Alytus, one of the first municipal public libraries established after the Lithuania’s regain of independency, functions since 1993. In December 2004, the Library was granted the name of Jurgis Kunčinas, famous prose writer and native of Alytus.
The Library operates the Readers Service, Bibliography, Acquisition & Catalogue Filing, Children & Youth Literature Departments and 3 branches: Vidzgiris branch, the First Alytus branch, and Information and Leisure Centre adapted to the needs of disabled and elderly people.
In 2004, the library had 3,739 readers. The city libraries accept over 67 thousand visitors annually. The stock comprises over 70 thousand copies of science and fiction books, art albums, periodicals and other documents.
The Library has a valuable collection of manuscripts of the fellow-countryman Jurgis Kunčinas.
Intensive and versatile cultural activities have long been the Library’s tradition. Not only literary evenings, i.e. meetings and book presentations are usual here, but exhibitions of paintings and photographs as well. The said public events are organised in the White Crow Parlour established at the Library.
The huge attention is paid to the transfer of the content of regional studies to the computer media: CD The Sculptures Decorating Our City was issued and the Internet database Visual Artists of Alytus and Their Works was created.
The Library’s long tradition is the Children’s Book Festival. For several years already projects are actively implemented aimed not only at modernisation of information services, but at the reduction of social exclusion as well. Information and Leisure Centre for disabled and elderly people could serve as an example of such activity. The Information Office of the Ministry of Justice is established in the central building of the Library.
