About the library
Public Library of Alytus District Municipality was established in 1925. It was the first public library in Dzūkija (the South East of Lithuania). The Library has continued its activities in Alytus even during the war time; nevertheless, the war and the post-war period reduced the Library’s collection significantly. In 1998, the Library was granted the name the Public Library of Alytus District Municipality. At the time being, the Library has 5 departments and 33 village branches. In 2004, 18 thousand users were registered; nearly 220 thousand visitors come to the Library annually.
The Library stores the general stock, the size of which is 0.5 million copies: 110 thousand copies of books and periodicals, 3.5 thousand items of audio documents, almost 3.5 thousand copies of regional studies publications representing the written heritage of Dzūkija that are, not unusually, especially rare. The Library stores the personal library of the fellow-countryman K. Nenortas, who lived in the USA and valuable books donated by other emigrants. The manuscript collection, personal archives of fellow-countrymen Prof. M.D. Arvydas Šeškevičius, Prof. H.H.D. habil. (history) Regina Žepkaitė, D.B.M.S. (biology), Vytautas Nedzinskas, Prof. M.D. habil. Juozas Steponas Danilevičius, journalist Romualdas Launikonis, teachers and regional researchers Vladas Stasiukynas, Vladas Kunčinas, Genovaitė Daukšienė, and historian and ethnographer Henrikas Rimkus, as well as collections of photographs and digital documents are stored.
