About the library
The Library was established in 1948. Since 1999, the Library have been drafting the projects, taking part in the calls for applications and fund raising.
In 1999, the Library has won the call for applications of the Open Society Fund Lithuania Music and Audio Information in the Public Library and consequently renewed its audio collection.
In 2000, the project Development of Services for Community and Resort Guests, Extra-Curricular Activities and Promotion of Creativity at the Library was produced to the Open Society Fund Lithuania. In 2001, the video collection and the Internet reading-room were set up at the Library; and programmes for independent learning of foreign languages were acquired. With the winning of the project Development of Services for Community and Resort Guests, Extra-Curricular Activities and Promotion of Creativity at the Library the Internet access was extended and Internet connection was set up in Birštonas Steading Library. In 2002, the Day Centre was established at the Children & Youth Literature Department.
During five decades of the Library’s activity its premises, structure, staff has changed and the collection has grown.

Today the visitors are offered a rich collection of printed matter amounting to 70,984 items of various documents: 67,075 items of books and periodicals, 3,124 items of audio and video documents (videotapes, vinyl records, CDs), and modern information media. The collection of Brunas Šilas (USA) is stored at the Library. Various events are organised such as the traditional Spring of Poetry festival that came back to Birštonas after 20 years on the initiative of the Library staff. Events in the former Ustronė manor organised in memory of Stanislovas Moravskis, one of the most famous memoir authors, Philomath and doctor of the 19th century, receive a huge attention. The public Internet centre was established at the library by the Window to the Future alliance.
