Public Library of Biržai District Municipality has started its activities in 1930, when Biržai department of the State Central Bookshop was established in Biržai. According to the survey of 1944, during the war and German occupation alone 3,000 books of Biržai Library were lost. In 1987, the Library moved to the newly reconstructed Biržai Castle Palace.
Since 1995, the district’s Versmė Literary Club meets at the library; Širvėna Publishing-House was instituted as well. Books are published and Springs of Poetry are organised together with the district’s literary people. At present the district’s library network consists of 27 libraries: Public Library of Biržai District Municipality, Vabalninkas city branch and 25 village branches.
The Library’s document stock consists of 94,633 items, the book stock of 84,139 items, and the regional studies collection of 2,140 items of documents; there is also a collection of 189 items of autographed books.
