Elektrėnai city library branch was established in 1967, as a branch of Trakai District Central Library.

In 2000, it became an independent Public Library of Elektrėnai Municipality. At present, the Library has 10 village and 1 city branches. The Library serves over 3,000 users.

Project activities enabled the development of the Library’s services. In 2001, the Internet reading-room with 4 workstations was opened. After winning the call for applications of the Open Society Fund Lithuania, reference and educational reading-room for children and teenagers was established.

In 2002, after the enlargement and reconstruction of Vievis city branch premises 3 computerised workplaces were set up.

In 2003, the Internet reading-room with 2 workstations was set up in Semeliškės village branch. The Library has a specialised shelf of information about the European Union and a computerised workplace for EU related information search. In autumn 2004, construction of the new library building has started.

In May 2005, public Internet access points were opened in 6 village branches.

The Library has a general collection of 38,861 items of publications and other documents to meet the needs of the region; it also collects and stores the regional studies material about Elektrėnai municipality. There is also a collection of books with autographs of the authors.
