About the library

Jonas Avyžius Public Library of Joniškis District Municipality
Jonas Avyžius Public Library of Joniškis District Municipality

The Library was established in 1937. Each historical period has individually influenced activities of the Library. For many years the Library was working in inappropriate premises and has moved for 6 times. After the reestablishment of independence of Lithuania, the Library premises were enlarged and renovated gradually.
In 1996, the new reading-room opened its door and in 1998, the Children’s Literature Department moved to the new premises.
In 2001, the Library was granted an award of Matas Slančiauskas for its activities in regional studies. This year was also important because of the start of implementation of the new ITs: the grant of the Open Society Fund Lithuania was received and implementation of the project Infoline for the Learning City Youth was started.
With the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, the Internet connection was installed in the Library and the Internet reading-room was opened.
In 2004, the Library was awarded the name of Jonas Avyžius, fellow-countryman and writer.
The present Library’s structure consists of 5 departments: Acquisition & Processing, Reader’s Service, Bibliography & Information, Children’s Literature, and Methodology Departments and 23 branches. Since July 2004, the Mobile Library has started its activities.
The European Union information point was created. The Library stock has some special collections: works, archival material and part of the personal library of the writer Jonas Avyžius; books and arts albums donated by the painter Juozas Galkus; 200 copies of books with autographs and inscriptions of various authors.
