About the library

The first state public library in Kelmė was established in 1937. When frontline was moving though Kelmė in 1944, almost everything has burned away and only 300 books survived.
In 1951, the Children’s Library was opened in Kelmė.
In 1978, the Library settled in the present premises. In 1992, the school libraries were affiliated to the branches of the central library.
In June 1995, the central library was granted the name of the writer Žemaitė. In 2000, the Youth Information Centre was opened at the Library.
Since 2001, the Library users may use the Internet. A small library of the European Union and information shelf of NGOs was set up.
