About the library
On 1 January 1939, a library was established in Gargždai. There was a large library in the mansion of E. Ronnem, the owner of Gargždai manor in the 14th century; in the years of independent Lithuania, other city residents also had some literature in their personal libraries. During the war almost all the books, photos and other valuable archival material was burned. After the war, the establishment of Klaipėda County Public State Library was started in Gargždai. In 1950, the Library has become a district library and in 1979, a central library with 1 city and 26 village branches.
In 1995, the District Central Library was granted the name Klaipėda District Municipal Public Library. On 28 December 2000, the Library was granted the name of academician Jonas Lankutis. Rare and old prints are stored in the Regional Studies Collection of the Library. A collection of prayer-books from the 19th and early 20th century is stored. Data bases are subscribed; the Internet is available for use.
