About the library

In 1935, the Central Bookshop was established in Kretinga that also functioned as a library. In 1936, the Public Library was established. With the development of the Library’s functions its departments were opened at separate buildings.
In 1991, the premises in Vilnius St 8 were allocated to the Library and Kretinga District Central Library has gradually moved there. In 1996, the Library became Kretinga District Municipal Public Library and in 1997, M. Valančius Public Library of Kretinga District Municipality.
Presently, the Library has the departments of Acquisition & Processing, Reader Service, and Lending, the reading-rooms for books, periodicals, foreign literature, Internet and audio collection, and the sectors for children’s literature, digital information and bibliography & reference.
The Library has 21 branches in the villages of the district and 1 in Salantai city. M. Valančius Public Library of Kretinga District Municipality is the local information, education and cultural centre providing users with knowledge and information of all types.
The Library stores the general collection of prints, videos, audio documents and electronic publications and talking books for the blind. The Internet and subscription data bases are available for use.
