About the library

The Library was established on 1 February 1937. It provided paid services then. The Library was established in Apšega Hall (Vilnius St 1 presently). Since 1950, together with the cultural centre and the regional museum it moved to the present premises, i.e. the former Synagogue. In 1985, the entire building of the Synagogue went to the Library.
At present, the Library has 4 departments: Acquisition & Processing Department; Reference & Regional Studies Department with Internet reading-room; Reader Service Department (Lending; Periodicals reading-room with the shelf of NGO information; Arts & Music reading-room); and Children’s Literature Department. 18 professional librarians are employed.

As of 2004, the Library had 3,122 registered users. Its collection consists of 85,176 items of documents: books, audio, video and electronic documents, and 130 titles of subscription periodicals. The Library stores some most valuable collections: personal libraries of the sculptor Juozas Kėdainis (4,093 items) and painter Bronė Jėčiūtė-Jacevičiūtė (165 items); archive of photographs Kupiškis. 1995-2000 (6,392 items) received from Kupiškis District Municipal Administration; collection of publications on regional studies (804 items); collections of old photographs and manuscripts.
