About the library

The Library was established on 1 October 1922. It had a collection of only 193 books; the reading-room used to receive 20 periodical titles; 83 readers used to read there. During World War II, the Library’s collection was moved from premises to premises. A lot of books were lost, but the Library was serving its readers even in such complicated situation.
In 1975, Mažeikiai District Library has moved to the new, three-storey building. In 1976, with the transition to the centralized system the District Library became a central library with 21 village and 2 city branches. In 1955, the Library was renamed to the Public Library of Mažeikiai District Municipality. Even if names of the Library used to change, it retained the same functions and mission.
Today the collection of Mažeikiai Public Library consists of over 90 thousand document items that are used by over 4,400 readers. The Library has Lending Department, Audio collection, Periodicals reading-room, Internet reading-room, Foreign Languages Learning reading-room, Bibliography Department, Children’s Literature Department, and NGO Information and Support Centre.
