About the library

The State Public Library in Pagėgiai was established in 1937. It was the first state library in Klaipėda region. After the Nazis occupation in 1939, the Library was transferred to Plungė. The Library was opened again in Pagėgiai in August 1946. In 1963, it was transferred to the new premises adapted specifically for the Library.
In 1976, it became the Pagėgiai city branch of Šilutė District Central Library and in 1995, the Pagėgiai city branch of Šilutė F. Bajoraitis Public Library. When Pagėgiai municipality was established in 2000, the Library became the Public Library of Pagėgiai Municipality. At present, the Library has the Adult Readers Service Department, Children’s Literature Department with toy collection (Vytautas St 2, Pagėgiai) and the Internet reading-room with 6 workstations. The Library has 9 branches.
The overall stock of Pagėgiai public library system amounts to 105,468 items of documents, 21,042 of which are in the Public Library. Here the regional studies collection of 1,396 copies is also stored.
The Library organizes traditional events: the Spring of Poetry literary festival of Pagėgiai region, the symposia of painters of Pagėgiai region and the Children’s Book Festival.
