About the library
Public Library of Prienai District Municipality was established in 1937. During the six decades of activity the Library’s name, structure and staff have changed for several times.
At present, the Public Library has 2 town and 27 village branches. 13 professional librarians work in 5 departments: Acquisition & Processing; Readers Service; Bibliography, Reference & Regional Studies; Children’s Literature; and Foreign Language & Business Information Centre. 4.4 thousand readers use the services of the Library. 56.3 thousand city residents and guests visit the Library annually, who are issued 160.9 thousand copies of various documents.
Today the Library is modern information, cultural and educational institution where new and modern work forms are implemented: here the toy collection, Internet reading-room, 8 public Internet centres are and audio collection is being set up; the Library takes part in the creation of LIBIS joint catalogue; various programmes are organized as well as fund raising activities to implement them. The print collection of the Library is of the general nature. It comprises 60,688 documents. 48 periodical titles are available in the reading-room.
