About the library

Established in 1931, Utena Department of the Central State Bookshop was commissioned the functions of the public library as well. In 1940, the Library has become a county library and in 19650, a district library. In 1994, the Library was granted the name of Antanas and Motiejus Miškiniai. At present, the district’s public library system consists of the public central library, 3 city branches, 22 village branches and 2 library points. The stock of the public libraries amounts to 407,623 publications.
The main activities of Utena A. and M. Miškiniai Public Library are as follows: education of the users’ information literacy; provision of information that is necessary for users in relation to their training, working, professional development, self-education, and leisure activities; organisation of cultural events. The Diamond of the Sun will Glow International Book Festival and late-night fairytale readings for children organised by the Library have already became a tradition. The projects were drafted and implemented to modernize the Libraries activities that were supported by the Open Society Fund Lithuania, Regional Library Programme of the Open Society Institute-Budapest and the European Commission Delegation to Lithuania.
In 2002, for its outstanding activities in pursuance of becoming a modern community information centre the Library was acknowledged the model library for Central and Eastern European countries.
The Library stores a personal library of the poet Juozas Šiožinis; the library of Utena Christ’s Ascension to Heaven Parish; collection of autographed books; and audio library.
A lot of efforts are made to create the Internet content: the Utena Region Internet portal, the electronic encyclopaedia of Utena Region and the Inforhouse Children‘s Internet web-site are created and maintained. The Antanas Miškinis CD was released.
In late 2004, the construction of the annex to the Library’s building has been started. The Library reconstruction is planned to be finished in 2007.
