About the library

The Library was established on 15 February 1923, after the institution of Rokiškis department of Kaunas State Central Bookshop that was also functioning as a library. Since 1995, the Library is functioning as a district municipal public library with 39 branches. In 2002, the Internet reading-room and the reading-room for European Union information and foreign languages was opened here; in 2002-2003, four public Internet access centres supported by the Windows to the Future alliance were launched; and in 2004, Juozas and Alfonsas Keliuočiai legacy study centre was opened. In 2005, six more public Internet access centres were launched in the village libraries.
The Library stores the following valuable collections: collection of the journalist, translator and senior editor of Naujoji Romuva magazine Juozas Keliuotis; collection of educator, poet and journalist Alfonsas Keliuotis; collection of educator and man of letters Vytautas Šavelis; collection of educator, musician, director and actor of the former Rokiškis folk theatre Vytautas Vajega.
The owl collection is stored in the Children’s Literature Department of the Public Library. Articles representing the symbol of wisdom and permanence, i.e. the owl are exhibited here. The collection was started in 2000 and consists of 70 exhibits at the moment.
Since 1995, the Library hosts Padaužiukai Puppet Theatre possessing the glove puppets, rod puppets, needle puppets, “walking” puppets and table-theatre puppets from various performances.
The Public Library is engaged in the publishing activities and has published the collection of articles and biography Rokiškio krašto knygnešiai (The Book-Smugglers of Rokiškis District), the proceedings of the scientific conference Brolių Juozo ir Alfonso Keliuočių kūrybinis palikimas (The Creative Legacy of Juozas and Alfonas Keliuočiai brothers), the book of Petras Jakštas Atsiminimų tėkmėje (In the Flow of Reminiscence), and the book Rokiškio rajonas (Rokiškis District) compiled by the library staff.
The district’s Vaivorykštė Literary Club meets at the Library.
