Šiauliai District Library was established in 1951.
After the library centralization in 1976, the Library has become a district central library wit 39 branches.
In 1995, the Library was named Šiauliai District Municipal Public Library. After reorganisation of the Library in 2001, the Reader Service Department was eliminated.
At present, the Library has the following departments: Information & Regional Studies, Collection Management & Acquisition, Methodics Office and the Repository.
Šiauliai District Municipal Public Library is commissioned to serve the basic school libraries of 11 villages of the district (Dirvonėnai, Bridai, Ginkūnai, Kairiai, Pakapė, Raudėnai, Šakyna, Varputėnai, Verbūnai, Voveriškės, Žarėnai). The Library has 29 village branches and Kuršėnai city library. Here 341 thousand physical units of prints of general nature and over 80 periodical titles are stored. 11 thousand residents read in Šiauliai district branches.
96 thousand visitors come to the Library annually. The Public Library does not serve the readers. It operates as a methodical guidance centre for its branches.
