About the library
In 1940, Trakai Public State Library was established that was named a district library in 1950. In 1954, the Library was commissioned to provide methodical guidance to 1 town, 2 children and 14 village libraries.
In 1977, the district libraries were centralized and the District Library became a central library with Children’s Literature Department established as well as 5 town and 33 village branches.
In 1995, the Library was named Trakai District Municipal Public Library. After the district reorganisation in 2000, Grigiškės city was joined to Vilnius and Elektrėnai municipality was established that was handed over 3 city and 7 village libraries. At present, 1 public library, 2 city and 15 village branches operate in the district.
In 2004, the Children’s Literature Department has moved from old and unsafe premises to the renovated premises of Trakai Secondary School. The Library Renovation and Modernisation Programme 2003-2013 provides for the construction of the new public library building.
Since 2001, the Internet reading-room operates in the Library. The Library has a stock of 63,255 items of prints, 2,316 reading users, and 23,460 visitors annually, issues 71,980 items of prints, subscribes for 63 newspaper and magazine titles.
The small portable library for the blind and the European Union library supported by the Information Centre of the European Commission Delegation to Lithuania operate in the Library.
