About the library

The Library was established in 1947. Its collection of 3,000 items was used by 100 readers at that time. The Library performed the functions of Varėna county library.
In 1950, it became Varėna District Library with 9 village branches. After the library centralization in 1976, it became Varėna District Central Library with 48 village branches (only 28 branches operate since 2000).
In 1997, the Library was named Varėna District Municipal Public Library. In 2003, it moved into the renovated modern premises. At present, the Library has 4 departments, 28 village branches and 58 employees. It has a stock of 83,532 items of documents, 5,856 readers, 86 work places for readers, 10 of which are computerised ones.
Over 77,700 visitors come to the Library annually. In 2004, Information Office of the Ministry of Justice was established in the Library. The regional collection includes a collection of publications of Vincas Mickevičius-Krėvė.
