In 1935, the Central Bookshop was established in Vilkaviškis that functioned as a public library.
In 1950, it became a district library funded from the district’s budget. 12 small portable libraries were served.
In 1976, the libraries were joined into the centralized library system. The district library became a central library with 44 branches. In the same year, it moved into the former building of Vilkaviškis Žyburys Gymnasium. After a year, the centralized library system was established.
On 15 October 1995, the Central Library has changed its name and became Vilkaviškis Public Library.
At present, 32 libraries function in Vilkaviškis district: a public library, 2 city branches in Kybartai and Virbalis, and 29 branches and 6 book issue points to serve the residents of rural areas.
The Central Library has 4 departments: Methodics, Document Acquisition & Processing, Reader Service & Reference, and Children’s Literature. In 2000, the Internet reading-room with 5 workstations was set up in the Library. The district public libraries store 355,079 items of documents, with 63,525 items stored in the Central Library. Valuable collections of autographed and rare books, archives of Santaka and Dobilas newspapers, and regional collection are stored.
