About the library
The Library was established on 1 October 1950 and was granted the name of Klaipėda Regional Library. After the regions were abolished in 1953, it was granted the name of Klaipėda Public Library and in 1979, it was granted the name of Ieva Simonaitytė.
In 1995, it became a county public library. The Library was constantly expanding and growing; the number of its readers was fluctuating depending on its capacities to meet their needs. With the increase in the number of working places, the number of readers was growing accordingly, and the Library structure and range of its services was changing. According to the size of the collection and extent of the service the Library gradually became the largest one not only in Klaipėda, but in the Western Lithuania as well.
At present, the Library has 25,903 readers. Over 700 visitors are issued with approx. 2,500 copies of prints daily. 67 librarians are employed. On 20 November 1998, the cornerstone for the new library building was laid. At the end of the first stage of the construction in late 2005, the new, light, specious and modern library will open its door with the Lending Department, two reading-rooms for general purposes, Periodicals and Internet reading-rooms, Cataloguing and Acquisition Departments, and spacious book repositories. Modern reader service and control system will operate.
